FBI documents hate crimes Bob Wehn and Realty One:
against gays and lesbians
The FBI has released the first figures from its hate crimes statistical program mandated by the Hate Crime Statistics Act of 1990. The report includes numbers of hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation as well as race, ethnicity and religion. The information is for calendar year 1991 and was supplied by nearly 3,000 law enforcement agencies in 32 states, including Ohio. However, only 27 percent of the participating agencies reported that hate crimes came to their attention.
In the summary of the report released in early January, FBI Director William S. Sessions commented that "While these initial data are limited, they give us our first assessment of the nature of crimes motivated by bias in our society."
A total of 4,558 hate crimes incidents involving 4,755 offenses were reported in 1991. Among the offenses measured, intimidation was the most frequently reported hate crime, accounting for 1 of 3 offenses. Following were destruction of property, 27 percent; simple assault, 17 percent; aggravated assault, 16 percent; and robbery, 3 percent. Other offense types each accounted
for 1 percent or less of the total.
Sexual orientation bias motivated almost 10 percent of all offenses. Of the 425 incidents classified under sexual orientation, 421 were anti-homosexual crimes, the remaining 4 being anti-heterosexual or antibisexual. Racial bias was the highest motivation, accounting for 60 percent of all offenses, with more than half of that number being anti-black crimes. Among crimes based on religion, which totaled 917 offenses, anti-Jewish offenses made up 792 of that number.
Where the race of the offender was known, 65 percent of the hate crimes were committed by whites, 30 percent by blacks, and the remainder by other races.
The summary listed agencies and incidents by state. For Ohio, 30 agencies participated, reporting 80 incidents. Neighboring states of Indiana and Kentucky each had one agency reporting no hate crimes. The highest number of incidents reported was in New York State, with 943 hate crimes for the year. New Jersey was second with 895.
March on Washington to feature mass wedding
Longest-term couples to be honored
America's longest-term lesbian, gay and bi couples will be honored at the Wedding, a massive ceremony of commitment to be held April 24, as part of the March on Washington.
"I want to celebrate the love and fidelity of these three extraordinary couples and show Middle America and the world that our relationships last as long as those in the heterosexual community, even with all the cultural pressures against us," said Rev. Troy Perry, founder and moderator of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC).
Rev. Perry will conduct the Wedding at 11:00a.m. Saturday, April 24, as part of the March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation. He expects the Wedding to set a world record as the largest ceremony of its kind ever held, with at least 4,000 gay, lesbian and bi couples exchanging vows. The Wedding will be non-sectarian and is open to all lesbian, gay and bi couples and their friends.
Rev. Perry also helped officiate at the Wedding of nearly 1,000 couples at the March on Washington in 1987.
He announced that UFMCC is launching a nation-wide search for the lesbian, gay and bi couples that have stayed together the longest. The Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches will give the three couples a free round-trip airline ticket to Washington to attend the ceremony. The three couples will be introduced at the Wedding.
"I have already received a letter from a gay male couple who just celebrated their 46th year together," Rev. Perry said. "I'm sure there are many, many couples out there who have been together for decades. I want to hear from them."
He requests all couples who believe that their relationship may be one of the oldest in the United States to write to: Rev. Troy Perry, The Wedding, UFMCC, 5300 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 304, Los Angeles, CA 90029.
